Y’alls Dominate in Series Finale Win, Sweep
FLORENCE, KY – The Florence Y’alls (31-41), presented by Towne Properties, controlled their series finale against the Windy City Thunderbolts (30-41) from start to finish in an 11-0 win at Thomas More Stadium on Sunday.
After a scoreless first two innings, Florence’s offense went to work in the third against Windy City starter Logan Schmitt (4.1 IP, 9 H, 9 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). Catcher Nick Wimmers led off the inning with a double before center fielder Lane Hoover reached first on an infield bunt single. With two aboard, left fielder Hank Zeisler doubled home Wimmers from third base for the first run of the game. With runners at second and third, designated hitter Craig Massey came to the plate and drove both home with a single. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, right fielder Harrison DiNicola’s sacrifice fly capped the scoring. After three innings, Florence led 4-0.
The Y’alls continued scoring through the middle innings and plated multiple runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the fourth, Craig Massey’s two-run home run increased the lead. In the fifth, an RBI double off the bat of second baseman Jeremiah Burks and a two-run single from Nick Wimmers ballooned the Florence lead to 9-0. The Y’alls scored their final runs of the day in the sixth on a Harrison DiNicola RBI single and a sacrifice fly from shortstop Ed Johnson that scored first baseman Zade Richardson.
The offensive outburst would prove to be more than enough behind solid outings from righthanders Carter Poiry (3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) and Ross Thompson (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K), who earned the win in his first Y’alls appearance.
The win marks Florence’s fifth consecutive victory, its first series sweep since 5/23-5/25 at Washington, and concludes the season series with Windy City. The Thunderbolts won five of nine games against Florence on the year. The Y’alls have an off day on Monday before they travel to Sauget, Illinois to take on the Gateway Grizzlies for the fourth series meeting this year. First pitch for Game 1 from Grizzlies Ballpark is scheduled for Tuesday, August 8th at 6:45 p.m. CT.
