Y’alls Outlast Otters in Extra Innings, Tie Series
FLORENCE, KY – The Florence Y’alls (27-41), presented by Towne Properties, matched the Evansville Otters (37-30) pitch for pitch into the 10th inning at Bosse Field on Wednesday and eventually prevailed 5-2 over the Otters in 10 innings.
In what would ultimately become just the Y’alls third extra-inning game of the year so far, the Otters scored first in the first inning. Left fielder Noah Myers tripled to lead off the game against Y’alls starter Jake McMahill (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 7 K) before shortstop Ethan Skender followed up with an RBI single. Just two batters into the game, Florence trailed 1-0. The Y’alls answered in the third with a run of their own when left fielder Lane Hoover was hit by a pitch from righthander Austin Gossmann (3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, 2 K), stole second and moved to third on an error, then scored on sacrifice fly hit by first baseman Brennan Price. Evansville plated another run in the bottom of the third when designated hitter Bryan Rosario walked, stole second, then scored on a Noah Myers single. After three innings, Evansville led 2-1.
Florence scored again in the fourth after back-to-back walks put two runners board for designated hitter Tristin Garcia, who singled home right fielder Hank Zeisler to tie the game 2-2. After that, neither team would score again through nine full innings of play. McMahill’s quality start and scoreless work from righthanders Aaron Rund and Brian McKenna helped keep the Otters’ offense at bay. In the meantime, Florence stranded 15 runners on base through nine innings, including at least two on base every inning from the fourth inning onward.
In the 10th inning, Evansville righthander Jake Polancic quickly retired the first two hitters he faced before Florence third baseman Brian Fuentes worked a lengthy at-bat that ended in a hit-by-pitch. With runners at the corners and two outs, center fielder Ray Zuberer stepped to the plate to deliver a go-ahead RBI single that scored Lane Hoover from third base. With Zuberer aboard, catcher Zade Richardson hit a two-RBI double to pad the lead, scoring both runners on base. Florence’s momentum and offensive breakthrough carried it to the bottom of the 10th, where righthander Ben Terwilliger struck out the side to earn his first professional save in a 5-2 victory.
The win snaps a five-game Florence losing streak and ties the current series at one game apiece. The Y’alls and Otters play their decisive Game 3 at Bosse Field on Thursday, August 3rd. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CT.
