Y’alls Upended in Series-Tying Blowout Defeat

FLORENCE, KY – The Florence Y’alls (22-31), presented by Towne Properties, suffered through a 18-6 defeat at the hands of the Washington Wild Things (23-30) that evened the current series at one game apiece.

The Y’alls scored first in the second inning when first baseman Craig Massey was hit by a pitch, reached third on a Washington error, then scored on an infield single from center fielder Lane Hoover. Through three innings, Florence led 1-0 and in a good groove behind righthander Edgar Martinez (4.1 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 K).

A fourth-inning rain delay broke up what ultimately became a long Washington rally. The Wild Things scored four runs on three hits and three walks against Martinez. Center fielder Robert Chayka collected an RBI single, two runners scored on wild pitches, and designated hitter Tristan Peterson’s sacrifice fly rounded out the scoring.

The Y’alls scored again in the fourth on a solo home run from designated hitter Brennan Price, but Florence would come no closer against a suddenly-volcanic Wild Things offense. Washington brought 14 hitters to the plate en route to a nine-run inning versus three Florence pitchers. Left fielder Wagner Lagrange’s bases-clearing double proved to be a decisive blow as Washington pulled ahead for good and led 13-2 after the inning.

Florence scored two runs in the fifth on an RBI double from Brennan Price and a sacrifice fly from right fielder Harrison DiNicola that scored Craig Massey from third base. Washington answered with four more runs in the sixth, courtesy of a two-run single from catcher Melvin Novoa, a bases-loaded walk, and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.

Florence never recovered from Washington’s middle-innings outburst and eventually fell 18-6 in the Y’alls’ longest game of the year to date (3 hours, 43 minutes). Florence now leads the season series versus Washington 6-2 and can clinch its third straight series victory over the Wild Things with a rubber-match victory on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:07 p.m. from Thomas More Stadium.
