Y’alls Snap Losing Streak, Win Opener Out of Break
FLORENCE, KY – The Florence Y’alls (22-30), presented by Towne Properties, snapped their 11-game losing streak and won their series opener 6-4 versus the Washington Wild Things (22-30) on Friday.
The Wild Things struck first in their return from the All-Star Break. In the first inning, former Y’all and Wild Things right fielder Anthony Brocato swatted a solo home run to put Washington ahead 1-0 one batter into the game. Florence starter Bobby Brabrand (6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) would settle down from that point in an eventual no-decision.
The Y’alls grabbed their first lead in the second against Washington starter Hayden Shenefield (6.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB). A leadoff error on Washington shortstop Abraham Sequera allowed catcher Zade Richardson to reach before right fielder Harrison DiNicola singled. Left fielder Ray Zuberer then walked to load the bases, setting up shortstop Jeremiah Burks. The Y’alls infielder capitalized with a grand slam – his first home run of the year in 50 starts.
Washington answered in the third with another home run off the bat of Anthony Brocato. Y’alls led 4-2 into the fifth when Washington scored again, this time on a solo homer from left fielder Wagner Lagrange. In the sixth, the Wild Things tied the game with a one-out double from center fielder Robert Chayka and a two-out RBI single from catcher J.C. Santini.
In the seventh, the Y’alls mounted a rally. Against Washington reliever Arrison Perez, the Y’alls put their first two aboard via a Tristin Garcia hit-by-pitch and an infield single from third baseman Brian Fuentes. With two outs, Zade Richardson doubled both home with a 2-RBI go-ahead hit. The Y’alls would maintain their lead for good and saw righthander Brian McKenna close out the game in the ninth for his second save of the season.
The win begins the Y’alls’ official second half with a victory and is Florence’s sixth win in seven games versus Washington. Game 2 between Florence and Washington is set for 6:36 p.m. from Thomas More Stadium on Saturday, July 15th.
