Florence Splits Doubleheader at Windy City
CRESTWOOD, IL – In a rare scheduled doubleheader, the Florence Y’alls split the two games with the Windy City ThunderBolts at Ozinga Field, losing the first game 5-4 but winning the second game 2-1.
In Game One of the doubleheader, the Y’alls fell thanks to a walk-off home run by Jairus Richards in the bottom of the ninth inning. Florence had tied the game at 4-4 on an Ethan Stern RBI single in the top of the eighth inning, but Joe Dougherty gave up the winning hit in the ninth to secure the Thunderbolts win.
Florence scored first in the first inning again and took an early 2-0, highlighted by a Brennan Price triple. The Y’alls tacked on another run in the third, Price again coming through with the RBI hit. Windy City had a four-run outburst in the sixth inning, featuring a Daryl Myers three-run double.
Jonaiker Villalobos gave up three runs in five-plus innings, striking out seven along the way. Bryan Ketchie countered with seven 2/3 innings on the bump for Windy City, giving up all four runs. Layne Schnitz-Paxton earns the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning to maintain the tie ballgame. Ray Zuberer, Rodney Tennie, Price and Stern all had a two-hit game. Richards had three for Windy City, and Myers and Brynn Martinez had two hits.
In the nightcap, each team was held scoreless until the fifth inning when Windy City scored the game’s first run on an RBI hit for Brian Fuentes. The Y’alls would not score until the ninth inning, but they scored two to take the lead. Back-to-back hits for Bryant Flete and Anthony Brocato jumpstarted the offense, and two fielder’s choices scored two runs. Alberti Chavez and Tennie picked up the runs batted in.
Tyler Thornton threw seven scoreless innings on the mound for Windy City, his first start in more than a month. The righty struck out eight and stranded eight Y’alls on base. Florence starter Alex Wagner was equally as impressive until allowing the run in the fifth inning. Wagner went four 2/3 innings giving up five hits and striking out six.
Kent Klyman and Evy Ruibal combined for four 1/3 innings of scoreless relief work to close out the game to give the Florence bats a chance. Brett Smith and Daniel Kight – pitching for the third time in as many days – allowed one run apiece to blow the Windy City lead.
The Y’alls have concluded a seven-game road trip and take on the Joliet Slammers at home tomorrow at 7:03 PM.
