Offense Leads Florence Past Windy City

CRESTWOOD, IL – Seven different Florence Y’alls batters had a multi-hit game as the Y’alls dealt early damage to the Windy City pitching staff, scoring just enough runs to escape with an 11-9 victory over the ThunderBolts Tuesday morning at Ozinga Field.

The win for the Y’alls is the team’s third in a row after losing eleven consecutive contests. Florence has won five of the first six meetings against Windy City this season.

The Y’alls wasted no time getting the offense started when Ray Zuberer III hit the first pitch of the game to right center field for a double, one of his two doubles on the day. Zuberer would later score on a Brennan Price RBI single for the early 1-0 lead.

After Windy City tied it up in the bottom of the first, Zuberer plated a run with an RBI single in the second for a 2-1 advantage. Florence started to blow it open in the third inning with an Anthony Brocato three-run home run, his fifteenth of the season. Florence scored again in the fourth on a Price RBI single and again in the fifth with five runs for an 11-4 lead after five innings. An Ethan Stern home run and RBI hits for Rodney Tennie, Alberti Chavez, and Zuberer highlighted the scoring in the big fifth inning.

Windy City did a nice job of chipping into the deficit all game long, and that stinginess almost resulted in a comeback. Dan Robinson doubled home a run in the third, and Matt Morgan and Bren Spillane had RBI hits in the middle innings to stay competitive. The ThunderBolts scored five unanswered runs combined in the eighth and ninth innings to get within 11-9, but they left two runners on in the ninth to secure the Y’alls win. Brynn Martinez hit a three-run home run as part of the Windy City come from behind efforts.

Billy Damon earns his first win of the season on the mound after five innings and three earned runs allowed. Zuberer had three total hits, as did Alberti Chavez including two doubles of his own. The Y’alls’ All-Star selections – Price, Brocato, and Chavez – combined for seven hits and six RBI today. Garrett Christman takes the loss in his third start against Florence this year, surrendering 10 runs in four 1/3 innings. Matt Morgan had three hits and two RBI in his Windy City debut. Jake Boone had three hits as well.

Florence and Windy City play another morning game tomorrow, July 13, with first pitch at Ozinga Field set for 10:35 AM CDT. The pitching matchup is Miguel Ausua for the ThunderBolts versus Jeremy Ovalle for Florence.
