Y’alls Drop Seventh Straight, Road Series in Loss
SAUGET, IL – The Florence Y’alls (21-26), presented by Towne Properties, hung tough with the Gateway Grizzlies (29-16) the entire night in a 5-2 defeat at Grizzlies Ballpark. With the loss, Florence has now dropped its last seven games and last four series dating back to late June.
The Y’alls and righthander Jake McMahill (5.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 5 BB, 2 K) fared better on the pitching end than in the series opener but still ran into immediate trouble in the first inning. For the second straight day, Gateway scored multiple runs in the first to grab a quick lead. After two hit-by-pitches and a walk loaded the bases, Gateway shortstop Abdiel Diaz lined a two-run single into left to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.
The Y’alls would answer with a run of their own in the fourth. Three straight singles from first baseman Craig Massey, third baseman Brian Fuentes, and designated hitter Brennan Price loaded the bases. With two outs, catcher Zade Richardson was hit by a pitch to bring Massey home from third and cut the Grizzlies lead to 2-1. Gateway scored again in the fifth when second baseman Gabe Holt hit a one-out double, then scored on an RBI single from left fielder Andrew Penner. After five, Gateway led 3-1.
The Y’alls rallied in the sixth for another run. A one-out Ray Zuberer hit-by-pitch and a Zade Richardson single set up second baseman Harrison DiNicola, who hit a sacrifice fly that drove in Zuberer from third to make it 3-2 Gateway. The Grizzlies rallied immediately in the sixth against McMahill, who walked his final three batters to load the bases before ceding to righthander Carter Poiry. Gabe Holt singled in two more runs to give Gateway a 5-2 lead that would hold into the ninth. Five Gateway relievers combined for four innings of one-run ball and doom the Y’alls to a series loss.
Florence has now lost 15 of its last 19 games and all five games on its current road trip. The Y’alls try to end the road trip with a victory on Wednesday, July 5th in the series finale versus Gateway. First pitch from Grizzlies Ballpark is set for 6:45 p.m. CT.
