Y’alls Upended at Home in Series-Opening Defeat
FLORENCE, KY – The Florence Y’alls (19-18), presented by Towne Properties, fell behind early and never recovered in a 9-3 series-opening defeat to the Evansville Otters (22-15) at Thomas More Stadium on Friday.
Florence ran into immediate trouble in the first against the division-rival Otters. Florence righthanded starter Bobby Brabrand (6.0 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) struggled through his first three innings and allowed a run in the first when a two-out throwing error on Florence shortstop Jeremiah Burks allowed Evansville center fielder Kona Quiggle to score from third base. The Otters led 1-0 after one inning.
In the second, Evansville continued its offensive pressure and scored a pair of runs when catcher Jake Green hit his first home run of the season. In the third inning, Evansville tacked on two more when left fielder Bryan Rosario singled to drive in third baseman Jomar Reyes and second baseman Ethan Skender. After three innings, the Otters led 5-0.
Florence struggled to mount offensive momentum against a stingy Evansville pitching corps. Righthander Jhon Vargas (5.0+ IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K) did not allow a run through his first four innings. In the fifth, Florence got on the board when designated hitter Brennan Price drew a bases-loaded walk. The Y’alls would allow two more runs in the sixth to fall behind 7-1, but rallied for two runs in the sixth inning. After third baseman Brian Fuentes doubled and shortstop Jeremiah Burks singled, catcher Cooper Edwards singled to drive in a run. Left fielder Marcos Castillo then walked to load the bases before center fielder Cole Brannen hit a sacrifice fly that drove Burks in from third base. However, the Y’alls would not score again against a trio of Evansville bullpen arms.
The Otters tacked on two more runs in the eighth and eventually won 9-3. The Y’alls are now 2-2 on their homestand and try to even the series on Saturday, June 24th when Evansville returns to Thomas More Stadium. First pitch between the Y’alls and Otters is scheduled for 6:36 p.m. ET.
