Y’alls Allow Late-Inning Power Surge, Drop Game Three

FLORENCE, KY – The Florence Y’alls (16-11), presented by Towne Properties, surrendered an early lead and failed to sweep the Empire State Greys (7-19) in a 10-8 loss at Thomas More Stadium on Sunday.

Empire State scored first in the second when left fielder John Mead homered, but the Y’alls answered back in the third with a four-run burst. Three straight singles from designated hitter Brennan Price, second baseman Harrison DiNicola, and third baseman Brian Fuentes loaded the bases for right fielder Sam Plash, who hit a one-out grand slam to thrust the Y’alls in front 4-1.

Florence held a three-run lead heading into the fifth, but Empire State caught fire offensively to score five and retake the lead. Nine Greys hitters came to the plate in the fifth against two different Florence relievers. Third baseman Josue Herrera’s two-run home run started the scoring before first baseman Josh Sears’ solo shot and John Mead’s second home run of the day padded the Empire State advantage. After four and a half, the Greys led 6-4.

Empire State scored two more in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, center fielder Quentin Holmes smacked a two-run home run. In the seventh, second baseman Steve Barmakian hit Empire State’s sixth home run of the day and drove in two more to give the Greys a 10-5 lead.

Florence scored three in the bottom of the seventh when left fielder Marcos Castillo hit a three-run home run – his first long ball as a professional – to bring the Y’alls to within two runs. However, Florence would not get any closer against Empire State lefthander Tanner Propst, who pitched the final 2.1 innings of the game and did not yield a run.

The Y’alls take the series against Empire State 2-1 and have now won their last four series. Florence travels to Sussex County on Monday before the first game between the Y’alls and Miners on Tuesday. Game 1 at Sussex County is set for Tuesday, June 13th at 7:05 p.m. ET.
