Y’alls Comeback Falls Short in Game One Loss

FLORENCE, KY – In their return to Thomas More Stadium following a nine-game road trip, the Florence Y’alls (8-8) fell into an early hole and could not recover in a 9-6 loss to the Washington Wild Things (8-8). The loss marks the first time Florence has fallen against Washington so far this season in four games.

Washington put together early offense against Florence left-handed starter Mike Kickham. The veteran struggled to the tune of a four-run Wild Things first inning. Left fielder Wagner LaGrange doubled in shortstop Nick Gotta for the first run before first baseman Andrew Czech drove in designated hitter Tristan Peterson from third to make it 2-0. Former Y’all Anthony Brocato then punctuated the inning with a two-run home run to left field to make it 4-0.

The Y’alls scored a run in the bottom of the first – first baseman Brennan Price singled in second baseman Craig Massey with one out – but Washington immediately responded with two more in the top of the second. Kickham hit Gotta with a pitch with two outs before third baseman Abraham Sequera smacked a two-run home run to make it 6-1 Wild Things.

Neither team would score until the top of the fifth when Brocato hit his second two-run home run of the night off of Y’alls rookie righthander Jestin Jones. Florence trailed 8-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh before an offensive outburst changed the tone of the game. Nine Y’alls batted against a pair of Washington relievers to plate five runs on four hits and an error to make the score 8-6.

Washington tacked on another run in the top of the ninth on a bases loaded walk from Florence righthander Carter Poiry that scored catcher J.C. Santini from third base. In the bottom of the ninth, Washington closer Lukas Young allowed a run but shut the door for a 9-7 Washington victory.

Second baseman Craig Massey set a new season high with four hits in the game. Brennan Price added to his team-leading RBI total with two more on the night, bringing his tally to 20 on the season.

Game 2 against Washington is set for Wednesday, May 31st from Thomas More Stadium. First pitch is at 6:31 PM ET.
