Y’alls Rally Late in Lake Erie, Avoid Sweep
AVON, OH – The Florence Y’alls (4-5) finally broke through offensively and earned a 6-1 win against the Lake Erie Crushers (6-3) in Game 3 of a three-game set at Mercy Health Stadium. The Crushers win the series 2-1 but could not secure a sweep.
Both starters held their opponents silent through five innings. Lake Erie righthander and former Y’all Yasel Santana dazzled through five shutout innings, but Y’alls righthander Nate Florence matched him pitch-for-pitch. Florence pitched five shutout innings of his own and struck out five. After five innings, the score was 0-0.
Lake Erie designated hitter Vincent Byrd Jr. broke the stalemate in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to right off of Florence reliever Joe Dougherty. However, the momentum shifted for good during Florence’s next time up to bat.
The Y’alls tied the game in the top of the seventh after loading the bases. A sacrifice fly from center fielder Cole Brannen that scored shortstop Jeremiah Burks from third base tied the game 1-1. The Y’alls wouldn’t score again in the seventh, but kept the pace up in the eighth.
In the top of the eighth inning, Florene broke through for three runs against Lake Erie righthander Brayden Bonner with three runs on three hits. A pinch-hit, two-RBI single from Brian Fuentes drove in Brennan Price and Ray Zuberer to make it 3-1 Y’alls. Catcher Cooper Edwards then singled to drive in Andres Rios and make it 4-1.
The Y’alls tacked on two more runs in the ninth, courtesy of an RBI double from first baseman Brennan Price that scored second baseman Craig Massey from first base and an error on Lake Erie third baseman Brendan Dadson that later scored Price from third base.
The Y’alls now head home for an off day before they continue their road trip with three-game series in Washington (May 23-25) and Windy City (May 26-28).
