Y’alls Implode in First Inning, Drop Series
AVON, OH – The Lake Erie Crushers (6-2) used a five-run first inning as a springboard to power past the Florence Y’alls (3-5) 6-3 in Game 2 of a three-game series at Mercy Health Stadium. The Crushers now lead the head-to-head and season series 2-0.
The Crushers teed off in the first inning against Florence righthander Bobby Brabrand, who made his first start of the season on Saturday following a stint on the injured list. After a leadoff single and a walk, an error by Florence right fielder Ray Zuberer opened the door for cleanup hitter Jack Harris, who cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple to make it 3-0. The Crushers would eventually bring 11 hitters to the plate and bat around in the first inning. After five runs on four hits and two errors, the Crushers led 5-0 heading to the second inning.
Armed with a five-run lead, Lake Erie righthander Nathan Holt went to work. In his first start of the season, Holt held the Y’alls scoreless over six innings and yielded just two hits while striking out four. The Y’alls wouldn’t score until the seventh inning against righthanded reliever Trevor Kuncl, who walked Florence third baseman Brian Fuentes with one out and watched him score two batters later when Andres Rios hit an infield single to score Fuentes from second.
The Y’alls tacked on another run in the top of the eighth after a leadoff walk to center fielder Cole Brannen and a balk that scored him from third base, but the Crushers answered in the bottom of the eighth with a run of their own on an RBI single from first baseman Vincent Byrd Jr. that scored designated hitter Jack Harris. After eight innings, the Crushers led 6-2.
The Y’alls scored a run in the ninth but could not mount a rally and fell 6-3. The Crushers’ win earned them a series victory and an early advantage in the season head-to-head series. Game 3 between the Y’alls and Crushers is set for Sunday, May 21 at 2:05 ET from Mercy Health Stadium.
