Bats Power Grizzles to Another Win Over Florence

FLORENCE, KY - For the second consecutive night the Gateway Grizzlies bats exploded, this time for 11 runs on 21 hits in an 11-2 win over the Florence Y'alls at Thomas More Stadium Friday night.

The Grizzlies scored nine consecutive runs after the first inning. Each team plated a pair of runs in the first, but the Y'alls were held off the board for the final eight innings.

Gabe Holt was a star yet again, going 5-5 with a double. He has nine hits in his first 11 at-bats of the season. Gateway hit four home runs in the game, including two for DJ Stewart. The Grizzlies went back-to-back with Clint Freeman and Stewart in the sixth inning. Six Grizzlies recorded multiple hits.

In a battle of two former MLB pitchers - which is believed to the the first instance of that type of matchup in Frontier League history - Josh Lucas earned the win after five innings if two-run baseball. He struck out six. Mike Kickham allowed two runs over two innings for the Y'alls with a pair of strikeouts. Rodney Hutchison takes the loss for the Y'alls, allowing the go-ahead home run to Abdiel Diaz in the fourth inning.

After not allowing a hit yesterday, the Grizzlies bullpen was solid yet again tonight. Collin Sullivan and Trevor Tietz did not allow a run and scattered three hits in four combined innings of relief work.

Logan Mathieu recorded his first professional hit tonight for the Y'alls. Craig Massey and Cole Brannen drove in the Y'alls only runs. Brannen added a triple later in the game.

Florence tries to salvage the series tomorrow, Saturday, May 13, at 6:36 PM. Jake McMahill gets the nod for the Y'alls, opposed by Carson LaRue. There will be a postgame band concert, as well as a cowbell giveaway for the first 500 fans. Gates at Thomas More Stadium will open two hours prior to first pitch for a Happy Hour featuring drink specials and tailgate games.
