Grizzlies Swing Past Y'alls on Opening Day

Florence, KY - Florence jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on Opening Day but could not contain Gateway in the middle innings, eventually falling 13-7 on Opening Day at Thomas More Stadium.

The Grizzlies scored at least one run spanning from the fourth through the eighth innings and recorded multiple hits in each of those five innings. Trailing 4-1, Gateway scored four runs in the fourth highlighted by a two-run double by Abdiel Diaz. Alex Hernandez drove home two with a double in the fifth, DJ Stewart ripped a RBI single in the sixth, Clint Freeman blasted a three-run home run in the seventh, and Gabe Holt brought home two with a single in the eighth.

Gateway recorded 17 hits as a team, led by four for Holt. Six Grizzlies had a multi-hit night, and Holt and Freeman led the way with three RBI each.

Despite an early Gateway run, the Y'alls immediately answered in the first with a Craig Massey RBI single and a Logan Mathieu sacrifice fly RBI. One inning later, Ray Zuberer hit the Y'alls' first home run of the season, bringing home a pair to give the Y'alls the early 4-1 lead.

Massey and Zuberer each had two hits for the Y'alls, who only got three 2/3 innings from starter Edgar Martinez and surrendered four earned runs. Luke Veinbergs also only lasted three 2/3 innings for Gateway, allowing six runs on seven hits. The Gateway bullpen did not allow a single hit over five pitchers used.

Florence tries for the first win of 2023 tomorrow, Friday, May 12, at 7:03 PM. Former MLB southpaw gets the ball for the Y'alls, opposed by Josh Lucas. Gates open two hours prior to first pitch for a Happy Hour, and there will be postgame fireworks.
