July 29, 2022- University of Cincinnati Night!

July 30, 2022

Florence, Ky. – The Sussex County Miners (36-28) used four consecutive innings with runs, including a four-run seventh, to power past the Florence Y’alls (27-36) 9-3 at Thomas More Stadium on Friday night.

Sussex County’s Juan Silverio homered in the top of the first inning, giving the Miners a lead that would never go away. The Miners benefitted from multi-hit games out of four different batters, including four hits from Silverio, three hits from Kevin Rolen, and three from Nick Garland.

For the Y’alls, Bryant Flete scored Anthony Brocato on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. That stood as the only run until the eighth, when a Brocato sac fly scored Alberti Chavez. Chavez drove home Cooper Edwards with a base hit in the ninth. On the same play, Miners catcher Nick Garland tagged out Rodney Tennie attempting to score. The two exchanged words and tempers flared at the end of the series opener, with the umpiring crew issuing a warning.

John Baker, Sussex County’s all-star pitcher, picked up a win in one of his best starts of the season. In eight innings pitched, Baker allowed only one run and struck out eight. He out-dueled Jeremy Ovalle, who took the loss for the Y’alls. Ovalle allowed three earned runs in six innings.

This loss snaps a season-high five-game winning streak for the Y’alls. Florence outscored opponents 62-28 over the span, which saw them hit 30 extra-base hits.

The Y’alls and Miners play game two of their series at Thomas More Stadium tomorrow night. Edgar Martinez is Florence’s probable starter for a 6:36 p.m. first pitch.
